From the Romans to the present day.

The Romans build a fort on the site of present-day Domplein, as part of the ‘limes’, the northern border of the Roman Empire.

The remains of the castellum form the foundation from which the missionary Willibrord spreads Christianity in the Netherlands.

Utrecht grows into an important place, becoming part of the Holy Roman Empire. The imperial Palace Lofen is built within the episcopal stronghold, featuring a Romanesque cathedral.

On 2 June 1122, Utrecht is granted city rights in Palace Lofen by Emperor Henry V.

The Gothic Dom Church is constructed. Stones from the Romanesque cathedral are reused.

The tallest church tower in the Netherlands is built, symbolising the (power of the) Church.

Rebels destroy statues in the Dom Church, and the Reformation in Utrecht becomes a reality.

A devastating storm destroys the nave of the Dom Church. The church and tower are permanently separated.

After more than 150 years, the remains of the collapsed nave are cleared away. Domplein is created.

The historical attraction DOMunder opens, an underground discovery tour through 2,000 years of Domplein.

Utrecht celebrates 900 years of city rights, and Palace Lofen opens its doors to the public.

It has been 200 years since the debris of the collapsed nave was cleared, creating the square as we know it today.
