Wandering around Domplein

In addition to your visit to the Dom Tower, the Dom Church, DOMunder, and Palace Lofen, there is much more to see on Domplein. Statues, historic buildings, hidden courtyards, and markings in the pavement—those who look closely will discover that Domplein is full of stories.

Wander along the square’s remarkable spots and discover what they reveal about the history of Utrecht.

Look down

Domplein owes its shape to the Romans. Around 2,000 years ago, they built a fort here. Wherever you enter Domplein, you will step over corten steel plates. These mark the location of the Roman wall of this former fort, lying beneath your feet. The yellow paving “inside the fort” refers to the sandy ground that was once here.

In addition to the yellow paving, you will notice other colours on Domplein. Each colour represents a different period in the square’s rich ecclesiastical history: dark brown for the vanished nave of the Dom Church, grey for the Holy Cross Chapel, and reddish-brown for St. Salvator’s Church.

Interactive city model

On Domplein, you’ll find a large stone map that comes to life on your phone. Download the accompanying app and a detailed 3D model of Utrecht will appear right in front of you.

Move your phone around the model, zoom in on the streets, and view the city centre from new perspectives—all while standing on Domplein. With a single tap, you can switch between two moments in time: 1560, when Utrecht was flourishing at the end of the Middle Ages, and 2026.

The model is an initiative by Sociëteit De Constructieve and is a gift to the city of Utrecht.
